Eating disorder: Real life story 3

Eating disorder: Real life story 3

"The bulimia started a week after we got engaged and would take nearly a decade to overcome"

Said Princess Diana in one of her confession tapes where she provided explosive details about her eating disorder. The statement above confirms that she had suffered from bulimia for a very long time. The princess had always felt lonely and insecure ever since she was aware of her husband, Prince Charles' affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. Her marriage that felt like a dream come true soon became a nightmare while she kept falling deeper into bulimia. The princess recorded herself saying "My husband put his hand on my waistline and said : a little bit chubby here, aren’t we? and that triggered off something in me and the Camilla thing". She confessed to binging on a large amount of food and ran towards the bathroom to throw it all up. In an interview with BBC, Diana was asked about her eating disorder. She replied - "Yes I did. I had bulimia for a number of years. And that's like a secret disease. You inflict it upon yourself because your self-esteem is at a low ebb, and you don't think you're worthy or valuable. You fill your stomach up four or five times a day—some do it more—and it gives you a feeling of comfort. It's like having a pair of arms around you, but it's temporarily, temporary. Then you're disgusted at the bloatedness of your stomach, and then you bring it all up again." She also explained the secrecy behind her disorder in the same interview - "You have to know that when you have bulimia you're very ashamed of yourself and you hate yourself—and people think you're wasting food—so you don't discuss it with people".

Low self esteem, a shattered marriage, insecurity, loneliness, depression etc brought the Princess such a terrible habit. For her, it was an 'escape' mechanism that worked for her to cope her bitter life in the palace. Even the queen of hearts tried to find her worth in binge-purging. Even though she said it 'worked for her', it really didn't for too long. She mentioned herself crying out for help but people concluded it as "Diana was unstable". After her bold act of publishing her biography 'Diana: Her true story' secretly from the royal family, she finally got her long awaited help. She got counselled by a psychiatrist and according to her, life felt 'under control' again. But the long time bulimia has left it’s effect from horrible weight loss to passing out at times. The burden of shame and insecurity she carried for years was finally down as she recovered from it.

Bulimia does not only affect a person physically but it breaks a person mentally too. The worth you try to feed yourself by binging will eventually be drained out when you purge it. So before being destroyed by this disorder, be aware, take steps.
